Image Credit: J.Lindsay Making all the right noises to probe volcanic field profiles Ocean-generated ambient seismic noise has revealed estimated crustal shear-wave velocity profiles beneath the Auckland Volcanic Field. University of Auckland researchers have shown that variations in seismic velocity in the shallow crust correlate with variations in surface geology. The results also highlight a contrast between oceanic and continental features in the field. The general understanding of the field is usually based on geological and geochemical observations from the surface. However, low local seismicity hinders passive seismic imaging and strong shallow heterogeneity reduces the resolution and penetration. The innovative approach to the new research helps overcome these issues. Tags:ambient seismic noiseAuckland Volcanic Fieldcrustal structureDun Mountain–Maitai TerraneNew Zealandpublicationstomography
